BIG PICTURE

We know the restaurant industry

There are many important things to train restaurant employees on, but some key areas to focus on include the following:

Customer service
Training employees to interact effectively with customers, take orders, and handle complaints is crucial for ensuring a good dining experience.

Health and safety
It is essential to train employees on proper food handling and safety procedures, including preventing cross-contamination and storing and preparing food properly.

Cash handling
Employees should be trained to handle cash, make correct change, use point-of-sale systems, and manage credit card transactions.

Menu knowledge
Employees should be familiar with the restaurant's menu, including ingredients, cooking methods, and any special requests or substitutions that can be made.

Teamwork
It is crucial to train employees on how to work effectively as a team, including communicating with each other and supporting one another during busy periods.

Sales and upselling
Training employees on how to upsell menu items and promote special deals can help increase sales and improve the overall financial performance of the restaurant.

Here is a work diary of an employee who just started working at a restaurant, focusing on areas where they had issues performing their job because they didn't know what to do or received inadequate training.

Day 1
I just started my new job as a server at a restaurant today. I'm really excited to get started and learn the ropes. During my shift, I was asked to take orders from customers and bring their food to the table. I was a little nervous about remembering everything, but I tried my best. I made a few mistakes, like forgetting to bring utensils or misplacing an order, but I'll get the hang of it with more practice. The company gave me an app to look up some of this. It's easy to use so far.

Day 2
I had another shift today, and I'm starting to get the hang of things. I'm still struggling a bit with remembering the menu and all of the different food items, but I'm trying my best to pay attention and ask questions when I need to. I also had some trouble with the cash register and making the correct change, but my manager said she would show me how to do it again tomorrow. The app had some cool calculator type of tools in it that helped me understand things a bit better.

Day 3
I'm feeling more confident today. I made fewer mistakes with orders, and I made the correct change at the cash register with the help of my manager. However, I still could use more training on things like food safety and proper food handling. I was asked to refill the salt and pepper shakers on the tables, but I was curious if I was supposed to use my hands or a utensil. I ended up using my hands, and my manager later told me that I should have used a utensil to avoid contaminating the salt and pepper. I feel like I need more guidance in these areas to feel fully confident in my job. I’ll have to check the app and see if that helps.

Day 4
I had another shift today, and I'm starting to feel more comfortable in my role. I took orders and served food without any major mistakes, and I'm starting to feel more confident with the menu and different food items. However, I still feel like I could use more training on food safety and handling customer complaints. I had a customer who was unhappy with their food today, and I didn't know how to handle the situation. I ended up just apologizing and offering to replace their meal, but I'm not sure if that was the right thing to do. I think I would feel more confident in these situations if I had more training in handling them. I guess we have some videos in the app that can help with dealing with difficult customers. I’m absolutely going to watch those.

There are several concerns that restaurant franchise owners may have about their workers, including:

Lack of experience
Many restaurant workers, especially entry-level employees, may need more knowledge and skills to perform their jobs effectively.

High turnover
Restaurants often have high turnover rates, which can be costly and disruptive for the business.

Poor customer service
Poor customer service can lead to negative reviews, lost business, and damage to the restaurant's reputation.

Lack of reliability and punctuality
Some workers may need better attendance or not be consistently late, which can negatively impact the restaurant's operations and customer service.

Lack of training
Some workers may need proper training, as a lack of training can lead to mistakes, slow service, and other problems when neglected.

Lack of engagement or motivation
Some workers may need to be more engaged or motivated in their work, which, without it, can lead to poor performance and low productivity.

Lack of food safety and sanitation knowledge
Food safety and sanitation are essential to maintain the health and reputation of the restaurant. Workers may need more knowledge and training on these matters.

Difficulty managing and delegating tasks
Some managers may need help to effectively manage and delegate tasks among their staff, Lack of managing and delegating can lead to inefficiencies and poor performance.

These are some common concerns that restaurant franchise owners may have about their workers. The owners must address these concerns and provide training, support, and solutions to help workers overcome these challenges and improve their performance.
